Powerful Women Weavers Selected for Public Art Project!

Eighth Generation was excited to receive nearly 30 submissions to our recent Call for Coast Salish Textile Artists. After painful deliberation, we have chosen 4 artists to collaborate with us in beautifying the new Hobson Place Residence and Clinic, which serves formerly houseless people. Together, we will create large scale public art installations that symbolize our support for our cities most vulnerable citizens while raising the profile of Coast Salish art culture.

While the primary focus of Eighth Generation and our Founder Louie Gong (Nooksack) is to create paid opportunities for cultural artists, this project is the first in which we use our platform to create permanent public art opportunities.

Danielle Morsette (Suquamish)

Danielle, pictured here with her stunning wool and cedar tunic, is highly esteemed in the weaving community despite her young age. She is excited to collaborate with Eighth Generation on this project, saying "this is an opportunity for Coast Salish Weavers to share who we are, that we are still practicing and innovating within our artistic mediums."

Andrea Wilbur Sigo (Squaxin Island Tribe)

Andrea is a multifaceted artist who illustrates, carves and weaves. At the International Salish Wool Weavers Symposium in 2016, she won first place for a fully-twined blanket made for her daughter's graduation.

Betty Pasco (Suquamish)

Betty is an honored Suquamish elder and weaver who is has been involved in her culture in an array of different fields, such as mentoring young women in traditional skills like clam digging, fry bread making, clam chowder making, weaving and more. She even helped mentor them in paddling a traditional carved canoe!

Gail White Eagle (Muckleshoot & Chehalis)

Gail is a culture bearer for her tribal communities, and she has worked with plant, animal and tree fibers for the last 25 years. In the spring and summer, you can often find her harvesting cedar and gathering plants for traditional dyes, medicines and food in the same places her ancestors did.
